The Smart Reference Desk (SRD) module is a User Enquiry and FAQ system which is meant to provide online information assistance to CAIS patrons. It is a web based application that facilitates interaction between CAIS patrons and a virtual reference desk.

1. What is Web OPAC?
Web OPAC is the online catalog of the Center for Academic Information Services (CAIS), UNIMAS. It is a database of all materials available at CAIS and is accessible via the Internet.
2. How do I search for library materials using the Web OPAC?
A link to the Web OPAC is available at CAIS website Users can search using the title of the book, author, subject or keyword. Select Advance search for more options on searching such as type of material, location etc.
3. How do I renew my loan?
You can go to the Web OPAC and click on the "My Account" tab. You need to key in your name, your CAIS barcode (available at your student/staff card) and your 6 digit PIN no. All CAIS patrons will have their own PIN no which is acquired during the first activation of their library account. Once you have logged in to your account, you will see the "The Checked out Item " tab and by clicking on that, the system will show you the list of items you have borrowed. You can choose to renew all or selected items only. If your books are overdue, the amount of fines will be stated.
4. What shall I do when I receive CAIS courtesy emails?
The CAIS courtesy email is sent as a reminder that the item you have borrowed is nearing the due date. To avoid fines, you should return the books on loan before the due date. If you still need those books for your reference then you may renew the loan online using the "My Account" function or at the Circulation Counter, Level G. You can opt to renew selected books or renew all books you have on loan.
5. Can I borrow books during semester break?
Students are not allowed to check out items from CAIS one week before the semester break begins. However, final year students can request for exemption if there is a need to use books for their final year project. Please contact the librarian in Customer Services Division- Macfarlaine Gilbert Jim Dibuad ( assist you in making this arrangement.
6. If I fail to renew my books online despite having tried many times, what should I do?
Please contact our staff at the Main Circulation Counter (Level G)at 082-583921/3922/3920 to get your books renewed via the telephone. You can also email our officer Mr MacFarlaine Jim Dibuad at or Ms Huzaimah Abdul Rani at to renew via email.
7. How many times can I renew my loan?
You can renew your loan twice provided no other patrons has reserved the item. If you wish to borrow the item for the third time, you will need to have the item checked in at the Circulation Counter and only then can you borrow the item again.
8. How do I reserve a book/publication that is currently on loan?
On Item record, click on "Request" tab. You will be prompted to key in Name, barcode and 6 digit pin number. You will be notified via email once the item is available for pick up. Please note that this feature is only available for items on loan.
9. What are online databases?
Online databases contains collections of information that are indexed for easy retrieval. Some databases are subject specific while others contain a wide variety of information. They can provide full text of journal articles/magazine/newspapers/books or just the citations and abstracts.Users will need their barcode (number behind student/staff card and 6 digit pin number (generated by CAIS) in order to access the databases remotely.
10. How to apply for library membership?
CAIS membership is divided into two categories, Internal and External Membership. Internal Membership All staff and students of UNIMAS are eligible to apply for membership. Students are required to activate their membership by making their first loan. Staff can have their membership activated at the Circulation Counter, Level G, CAIS Building. External Membership To apply for membership, users can register at the Circulation Office, Level G, CAIS Building or simply fill in the Online Patron Registration form at:
11. What are E-Journals?
E-journals are electronic journals subscribed by CAIS and are accessible via the E-journal Portal. The link to this portal is provided at CAIS homepage and also the Web OPAC. Users accessing from off campus will be prompted for their barcode number (the numbers behind student/staff card) and their 6 digit pin number. Please contact CAIS if further assistance is needed.
12. Can I go to other University Libraries?
Students and staff of UNIMAS can enter other public university libraries to do reference only. Please bring your UNIMAS student card/ staff card as you will be asked to identify yourself upon entering the library.
